Preston Visits the Federal High Court of Nigeria (Akure Division)
Preston’s Year 10 and Year 11 students took learning outside of the school’s environment to the Federal High Court of Nigeria (Akure Division), on Tuesday, 24th October, 2023 in a quest to gain firsthand knowledge of the legal system, court processes, and the cases handled by the Federal High Court.
The court registrar – Bar. Onome Sajere, during the guided tour around the premises, explained various aspects of the court, its history, and its significance in the legal system. The students also had the opportunity to visit the admin office, account section, the library, and other important areas within the court.
The students’ experience to witness two cases in the courtroom, prompted some of the most thought-provoking questions, which centered on the concept of oaths and the execution of criminals charged with drug trafficking; that led to the presentation of evidence, cross-examinations, and the arguments made by the prosecution and defense council - a case that highlighted the importance of the criminal justice system and the role of the court in ensuring justice is served.
It was truly a memorable and enlightening day for all the students who participated.
